Summary of the case: On Sunday the 9th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha, Libya, on a white fiberglass boat. The relative told us that the travellers were adrift as they had run out of fuel and gave us their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We passed on updated positions to the authorities as often as possibly as well as information about the situation onboard, where one person had lost consciousness and the boat had started to take in water. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
