Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 12th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 33 travellers, including four women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli, Libya, the night before on a fiberglass boat. They told us that their engine was broken and that water was entering the boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
