Summary of the case: On Monday the 3rd of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 35 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Ajdabiya, Libya, on the 29th of May on a wooden boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position, but according to the relative they were in international waters. The relative also told us that their engine was broken. We immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
