Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 28th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 16 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara on a fiberglass boat and told us that they were drifting as their engine had broken. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After our initial contact, communication with the boat was difficult due to poor reception. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
