Summary of Case: On the morning of November 4th, at 08.00 CET Alarm Phone was called by a relative who was worried about a group of four women, seven children and 53 men who had departed Sabratha in a wooden boat. We tried to establish direct contact to the people in distress. Although our calls were sometimes taken, we were unable to establish working communication, could not obtain a GPS position and our calls remained unanswered from 09.15 CET onwards. We continued to try to reach the group of 64 people but remained unsuccessful. We were unable to obtain any further information on this distress case.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
