Situation: 17 travellers in distress in the Central Med, eight rescued by fishermen, nine remain missing.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 27th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The relative told us that 17 people had left together from Sabratha, Libya, the previous afternoon. Around 26 km off the Libyan coast the boat capsized. Eight people had been rescued by fishermen and brought back to Libya, while nine people remained missing. We were not able to reach the group, but immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We never received any information from the so-called Libyan coastguard about this boat. To our knowledge, the nine people remain missing.
