Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 22nd May 2024Case name: 2024_05_22-CM128
Situation: 55 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 22nd of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 55 travellers, including two children and 15 women, five of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya on a white rubber boat and told us that their engine had broken and they were drifting. They also told us that several people onboard were sick. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Eventually, we lost contact to the travellers. Later, we were informed by the so-called Libyan coastguard that they had intercepted the boat. However, we were never able to confirm this with the travellers or any relatives.
