Summary of the case: On Thursday the 16th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers, including four women and six minors, two of them babies, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya two days earlier on a wooden boat. According to the relative, the engine was broken and the boat was drifting. The travellers were not wearing life vests. Through the relative we received their GPS position. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Humanity 1.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets.
