Summary of the case: On Monday the 15th of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 55 travellers, 37 men, eight women and 10 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a blue wooden boat and told us that water was entering. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in touch with the people and updated the authorities with their position when possible. We were able to follow as the conditions on the boat deteriorated and weather became increasingly bad. At 02.09 CEST the travellers told us that they saw a rescue vessel approaching. We instructed them to stay seated and calm during the rescue operation. We learned that they had been rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barents operated by Doctors without Borders.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets.
