Summary of the Case:
In the early morning of the 18th of January, the Alarm Phone was alerted to a group of 42 people, including 9 children, and a very sick elderly woman, who had arrived on the island of Lesvos in Greece. We sent an email to inform Greek authorities, Frontex and NGOs on the island of the group’s situation and location, informing them that the people needed medical attention and wanted to claim asylum in Greece. We received an email from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) who confirmed they would send a team to look for the people. A few hours later, we were informed that MSF had found the 42 people, providing them with medical care.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
