Summary of the Case: In the early morning on the 10th of November 2022, the Alarm Phone was alerted to a group of 17 people who had arrived to Lesvos Island. The group included a pregnant woman and a 2-year-old child, who were in critical condition and need of medical attention. After we made contact with the group, we sent an email to alert the Greek authorities and NGOs on the island, noting that the group wished to apply for asylum in Greece. Doctors without borders later confirmed by email that they had found the group and provided medical and psychological assistance to 20 people who were then taken to Mavravouni Camp by the police.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
