Summary of the case: On Friday the 22nd of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 42 travellers, including three women, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax, Tunisia, the previous evening. They told us that their engine had broken, that they had no food left and that people were sick. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. The following morning we reached the travellers again and were told that they had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and were with the police.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
