Summary of the case: On Saturday the 16th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 60 travellers, including 10 women and at least one baby, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They told us that their engine was broken and that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. In addition, we reached out to nearby merchant vessels, informing them about the distress situation and their duty to provide assistance. As time passed, we could hear that the distress onboard increased and the travellers reported that their vessel was about to capsize. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the search and rescue NGO vessel Geo Barents.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
