Summary of the case: On Thursday the 14th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 55 travellers, including three women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiyya on the 12th of March at 5am on a black rubber boat. We were not able to establish direct contact and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We later learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
