Situation: 105 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and brought to Djerba.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 6th of February 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 105 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions to authorities. As time passed, we could hear that the panic onboard increased as the travellers feared for their lives. In the meantime, the Tunisian coastguard told us that they would not coordinate search and rescue while the Maltese and Italian coastguards refused to give us information about whether they were coordinating a search and rescue operation. In the late evening, we lost contact to the travellers. Later, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and brought to the Tunisian island Djerba.
