Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 5th of July 2021

Case name: 2021_07_05-CM497

Situation: Unknown number of people started from Libya and were rescued to a Tunisian oil platform (Ashtart Oil Terminal)

Status of WTM Investigation: concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case:

On the 5th of July 2021 at 14:20 CEST the Alarm Phone received a call from a satellite phone. The connection was very bad and it was impossible to get a proper GPS position. After several phone calls we received a GPS position at 14:55 CEST and relayed it with the other information we gathered to Tunisian, Italian and Maltese coast guard and the NGOs Sea-Watch and Pilote Volontaires. The people told us they would be drifting and the situation onboard was urgent. They have seen a blue and red ship nearby. When we phoned the Tunisian coast guard later they confirmed the rescue of the boat to a Tunisian oil platform (Ashtart Oil Terminal).
