Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the Case: In the evening of the 10th of January, travellers alerted the Alarmphone shift team to their boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. It is not clear if the boat had started in the morning of the 9th or of the 10th of January from Zuwara in Libya. There were 46 people, including 3 women, on a green plastic boat with one motor. They had little fuel left and were drifting in bad weather conditions with very high waves and water entering their boat. The shift team managed to reach the travellers and relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. On the 11th of January in the early morning, they were rescued by an Italian merchant vessel and brought to European shores in Lampedusa.
