Summary of the Case: On the 9th of June, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The group of 59 travellers, including five women and one child, had departed from Tan Tan, Morocco, in a zodiac. The shift team managed to reach the travellers who reported that they were exhausted, in particular the child, and needed help. The shift team alerted the relevant authorities, relaying all information to them, including the position and phone number of the people on the boat. In the next hours, the shift team reached the travellers again and again, and their situation got worse as they had not eaten in three days and were running out of water. Around 17 hours after the first alert to the boat, the shift team was informed that the boat had been rescued to Lanzarote.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
