Summary of the Case: On the 2nd of January 2024, a relative informed the Alarm Phone about a boat that had left Nouakchott, Mauretania, on the 29th of December 2023. The shift team alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the case and relayed all the information to them, as well as to the Moroccan and Mauretanian search and rescue authorities. The authorities did not share information about possible rescues or arrivals, but in the evening of the same day, the relative informed the shift team that the travellers had arrived on the Canary Islands.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
