Summary of the Case: On the 14th of January 2024, a relative informed the Alarm Phone about a rubber boat that had left from Tazaghine, Morocco, in the early morning of the same day. The shift team could not reach the fourteen travellers but still alerted the Spanish search and rescue organization Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information. For the next few hours, the shift team tried to reach the travellers by phone, but had no success and instead tried to find out whether Salvamento Maritimo had found the boat - also without success. It was not until the evening of January 15 that the shift team received the information from the relative that Salvamento Maritimo had rescued the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
