Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Thursday the 30th of March 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team was called by one person who was attempting to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar from the port of Tangier Med towards Tarifa. The person told us that they were very tired and had trouble breathing. They were only wearing a wetsuit. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Moroccan rescue authorities to the distress situation, relaying all the information we had. Later, the Moroccan rescue authorities informed us that they had rescued the person and brought them back to Morocco. Soon after, the traveller confirmed that they were safely on land.
