Summary of the Case:On the evening of the 9th of November 2022, the Alarm Phone was contacted by concerned relatives about a group of 27 travelers who had departed from Boumerdes, Algeria, at 23:00 local time the night before (November 8th). They were traveling in a boat 6.20 meters long and were heading towards Ibiza/Balearic Islands in Spain. Unable to establish contact with the boat, the Alarm Phone notified the Spanish Search and Rescue organization Salvamento Marítimo (SM) and passed on all the information we had. On November 11th, SM confirmed by phone that the boat had been rescued to Mallorca the day before.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
