Situation: 36 travellers in distress in the Atlantic, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to the Canary Islands.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 5th of October 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 36 travellers, including one women, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tarfaya at around midnight on a white rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. We then relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in contact with the travellers who told us that they were drifting and that water was entering their boat. We passed on information about the situation onboard as well as their updated GPS position to Salvamento Maritimo. They in turn confirmed that they had launched a search and rescue operation. In our last call to the travellers they told us that their satellite phone was almost out of battery, and from 15.00 CEST we could no longer reach the boat. Some hours later, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that they had rescued the travellers who were now onboard their vessel and being brought to the Canary Islands.
