Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 11th of October 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 17 travellers, including one minor, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima the previous morning at 08.00 CEST on a green polyester boat heading towards Motril. The relative informed us that the boat was very close to Motril, but that their engine had stopped working and they were therefore left adrift. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation. We managed to get the GPS position through the relative and forwarded it to Salvamento Maritimo who soon after confirmed that they had sent a rescue vessel to the position. In the early hours of the morning the following day, Salvamento Maritimo told us that they had rescued the travellers.

Border police patrols
