Summary of the Case: Late in the evening on the 11th of November, we were alerted by relatives to a group of 7 people, including 3 children, who had arrived on Lesvos Island. The 3 children were young, the youngest being only 1 year old, and some of the group were injured. The group had previously experienced a push back to Turkey. We did not manage to make contact the group until early the next morning, on the 12th of November. When we finally received a position from the group, we immediately alerted the Greek authorities and NGOs on the island advising that the group were in need of urgent medical assistance and wished to apply for asylum in Greece. We later received confirmation from the relatives that the group had been found by Doctors without borders and has been taken to the camp.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
