Situation: 37 people left Tripoli (North Lebanon) on a wooden boat to reach Italy. While they were drifting in Greek search and rescue zone, they were mistreated and pushed back to Turkey

Summary of the Case:
On September the 1st late afternoon, the Alarm Phone was contacted about a boat that had left during the night from Tripoli, Lebanon, towards Italy. The person on the phone, who was the father of one of the 37 persons on board, had lost contact with them since 2 pm, when the boat was drifting and while “masked and armed Greek navy” were coming to them. We were not able to reach the boat. The next day, the relative contacted us again: the travelers were pushed back to Turkey after being beaten and stolen by Greek coast guards.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
