Summary of the Case:

In the late afternoon of the 28th of April, Alarm Phone received a call by a worried relative, alerting us to a group of around 150 people including more than 10 children in distress, who had departed from Antalya, heading to Italy. During the alert, the caller related that when he had lost contact with the the travellers 3 days prior, at that time their motor was damaged, they had no water left and their last known position was close to Peloponnese, Greece. We tried to establish direct contact to the boat but without avail. We alerted the authorities at 18:29, but they didn’t provide any further information. Then the following day we received news from the relative that the group had arrived to Italy on the 28th of April, that they had arrived safely but some people were ill.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
