Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 12th of September 2022 Case name: 2022_09_12-ATL103
Situation: 79 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Las Palmas
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the Case: On Monday the 12th of September 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted in the evening by a relative to a group of 79 travellers, including seven women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left the same day at around 01.00 CEST from Boujdour towards the Canary Islands on a black rubber boat. The relative stayed in contact with the boat and was able to send us their GPS position at 23:10 CEST, then he lost contact to the boat. We relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They confirmed that they were taking care and starting a rescue operation. In the early morning the following day (at 2:26 CEST), Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that the rescue operation was completed and that the travellers were brought to Las Palmas.
