Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea.
Summary: On Thursday the 16th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 61 travellers, including nine women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Laayoune just after midnight the same day on a grey rubber boat, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and get their GPS position, showing that they were within the Spanish search and rescue zone. We alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated GPS positions to Salvamento Maritimo. The following day, the relative told us that the boat had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and brought back. The Moroccan rescue authorities later confirmed that they had intercepted a boat matching the description we provided.
