Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 23rd August 2022Case name: 2022_08_23-WM043
Situation: 29 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Mainland Spain.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 23rd of August 2022 just before midnight, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 29 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima at around 10.00 local time the same morning on a white polyester boat. The relative had lost contact to the travellers at 16.00 CEST, and we were also not able to establish a direct contact to the boat. However, we alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, forwarding all the information we had. In the morning, we managed to get a GPS position of the travellers via the relative, which we passed on to Salvamento Maritimo. According to the relative, the boat had broken down and the travellers were drifting. During the morning, we were several times able to relay updated positions from the boat. At 06.59 Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that they had found and rescued the travellers.
