Case name: 2022_08_21-WM041

Situation: 3 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the case: On Sunday the 21st of August 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of three travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima on jet ski the same afternoon, and through the relative we were able to receive their GPS position although we were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers. In addition, the relative told us that they had run out of fuel and were therefore in distress. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue authority Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, relaying all the information we had. They confirmed that they were initiating a search and rescue operation. Soon after, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that they had rescued the travellers and brought them to Spain.
