Summary of the Case: On November 5th, 2022, the Alarm Phone was contacted directly by a boat in distress that was located off the coast of Spain near Malaga. They had departed at 6:00 CET earlier that day from Al Hoceima. By the time they contacted the Alarm Phone, their engine had stopped working and they were in poor condition. The Alarm Phone alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) of this boat in distress. The following day on the 6th of November, it was confirmed that the travellers had managed to reach Malaga themselves.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
