Summary of the case: On Saturday the 7th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 29 travellers, 27 men and two women, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from around Al Hoceima the same morning at around 06.00 CET on a green wooden boat. We were not able to reach the travellers directly but relayed the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They confirmed that they would carry out a search and rescue operation. In the night, the relative informed us that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Motril. In the morning, the rescue was confirmed by Salvamento Maritimo.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
