Situation: 45 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to the Canary Islands.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Friday the 25th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers, including pregnant women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from between Boujdour and Dakhla at around midnight on the 24th of February on a wooden boat. We were able to reach the boat, but due to bad connection it was not possible to communicate and get their GPS position. However, we relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo.
After many hours attempt, we finally managed to get the GPS position of the travellers which we immediately forwarded to Salvamento Maritimo. Just after midday, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they had rescued the travellers who would be brought to the Canary Islands.
