Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Thursday the 10th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 57 travellers, including 14 women and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from between Laayoune and Boujdour, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers who told us that their engine was having problems and that the weather conditions were bad. We also managed to get their GPS position. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, who confirmed that they would coordinate a search and rescue mission. At 18.28 CET the travellers told us that a vessel was approaching them. An hour later, Salvamento Maritimo informed us that the rescue operation was ongoing. Just after midnight, we received a confirmation that the travellers had been rescued. The following day, the relative also confirmed that the travellers had been rescued.
