Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Thursday the 3rd of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 63 travellers, including 14 women and four children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from Boujdour the same morning on a grey rubber boat and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and get their GPS position. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation, relaying all the information we had. Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they would launch a search and rescue operation. We stayed in touch with the travellers and forwarded their updated GPS positions to Salvamento Maritimo when possible. At 19.57 CET the travellers told us that they had just seen a helicopter overhead. At 20.42 CET Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had located the boat and would commence the rescue operation. In the night we got the confirmation that all travellers had been rescued and would be brought to the Canary Islands.
