Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Tuesday the 23rd of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to two boats in distress in the Atlantic Sea. One of the boats was carrying 51 travelers, including 12 women and one child, the other was carrying 49 travellers, including 12 women. The two grey rubber boats had left together around midnight the previous day from around Boujdour. Despite many attempts, we never managed to establish a direct contact to any of the boats. We alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, passing on all information we had. The following day we learned from Salvamento Maritimo that they had rescued a boat matching the description of the boat with 49 travellers, while a boat matching the description of the one with 51 travellers had been intercepted to Morocco.
