Situation: Around 53 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Tuesday the 25th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 53 travellers, including 16 women and six children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from around Laayoune the same morning at 03.00 CET, heading towards the Canary Islands. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position which we immediately relayed, together with all other information we had, to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We stayed in contact with the travellers, who at around 23.00 CET saw a helicopter overhead and tried to make themselves visible. Just before midnight, we saw online that one of the rescue assets belonging to Salvamento Maritimo was very close to the last known position of the travellers. The following day, we learned from Spanish media that a boat matching the description we had been given had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
