Case name: 2022_01_10-WM010

Situation: Three travellers in distress in the Western Med, picked up by merchant vessel and brought back to Morocco.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Monday the 10th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of three travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from a beach close to Ceuta on a plastic kayak the same morning. The relative told us that the travellers were in urgent distress as the kayak was taking in water. We managed to reach the travellers who gave us their GPS position and confirmed that they needed help urgently. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Moroccan rescue authorities to the distress of the travellers. Both coastguards confirmed that they were looking for the boat. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. In the evening, the Moroccan rescue authorities informed us that the travellers had been picked up by a merchant vessel and would disembark in Morocco.

  • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
