Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 12th February 2022Case name: 2022_02_12-CM028
Situation: 90 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Ocean Viking operated by Doctors without Borders.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 12th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 90 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They told us that their engine was no longer working and that their boat was taking in water. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted all relevant search and rescue authorities to the distress situation. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated GPS positions to the authorities when possible. As time passed, the situation onboard the boat deteriorated as water was entering and the weather was getting worse. In the evening, the travellers reported that they had “lost two people”. However, the Maltese coastguard informed a nearby merchant vessel that they had the situation under control. Only in the night, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the rescue NGO vessel Ocean Viking operated by Doctors without Borders. We do not know if the two people the travellers referred to as “lost” were rescued or remain missing.
