Situation: Around 50 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 11th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of around 50 travellers, 35 men, 10 women and five children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left at around 01.00 CET from around Misrata on a white boat, and told us that their situation was urgent as several travellers were in a very bad condition. They had run out of drinking water and their engine was no longer working. We were able to get their GPS position, showing that they were still close to the Libyan coast. We immediately alerted all relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had about the distress case. At around midday, we lost contact to the travellers. In our last call we could hear how the panic onboard was increasing. In the afternoon, it was confirmed that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
