Summary: On Saturday the 27th of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 53 travellers, 36 men, four children and 13 women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left the previous day at 05.00 CET from Laayoune on a grey rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers who told us that they had run out of fuel and were thus left adrift, and that the weather was getting worse. We alerted the Spanish rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, passing on all the information we had about the boat in distress. At 15.53 CET the travellers told us that they could see an aircraft above them, and Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they had sent a rescue vessel towards the travellers as well. Two hours later, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed that they had rescued the travellers and would bring them to Fuerteventura. However, we later learned that two people had died on the boat before they were rescued. Our solidarity is with the family and friends of those who lost their lives.
