Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 21st November 2021Case name: 2021_11_21-CM639
Situation: Two rubber boats in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted and brought back to Libya.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Sunday the 21st of November 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a local fisherman to a group of travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left in a convoy with two rubber boats from Zawiya the same morning at around 07.00 CET, and according to the fisherman they were 28 nm north of Zawiya. The boats were taking in water and needed urgent assistance. As the fisherman had met the travellers at sea, we did not have a phone number of the boat. We immediately forwarded all the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities.
We were not able to establish with certainty what happened to the travellers, but believe that they were among those intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard on this day.
