Summary of the case: On Saturday 23rd of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 52 travellers, including two women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwarah the same morning at around 05.00 CEST on a green fiber glass boat. We managed to reach them and get their GPS position, and they told us that they were out of fuel and that the weather was getting worse. We forwarded their GPS position to all relevant rescue authorities along with all other information we had. After this, we lost contact to the travellers. The following morning we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coast guard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
