Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 18th September 2021

Case name: 2021_09_18-WM716

Situation: Three travellers in distress in the Western Med, their fate remains unclear.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Saturday the 18th of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of three travellers missing in the Strait of Gibraltar. The travellers had left from Tangier on the 12th of September on jetski. We reached out the the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Spanish Guardia Civil, but neither was able to give us any information about whether the travellers had been rescued. Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had rescued one group of travellers on jetski, but as there had been several similar cases in the area those days, it was not possible to match the group rescued with the group we had been alerted to. We attempted for several days to reach the travellers without success and stayed in contact with their relatives. Unfortunately, we were never able to find out what happened to the travellers.
