Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 28th of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was informed by a relative about a boat in distress on its way from Turkey to Italy. Onboard were 85 travellers, including 15 children. They had left from Turkey on the 24th of September and had thus been at sea for around four days. The relative gave us a position of the boat, showing that it was only around 1 km from the shores of Sicily. We immediately called the travellers who confirmed that they could see the Italian coast. We sent an email to the Italian coastguard alerting them to the boat. When calling the Italian coastguard later, they refused to give us any information about ongoing search and rescue operations. The next morning, however, we learned from the relative that all of the travellers had arrived safely in Italy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
