Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 21st of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 45 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a sailing boat and told us that they were drifting. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We later learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to mainland Italy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
