Summary of Case: In the evening of September 20th Alarm Phone was called by a relative who informed us about a group of 20 women, five children and 62 men in distress who had departed Zawiya the prevous night. The caller provided a phone number of the baot but no further details. We tried to establish direct contact to the people in distress throughoug the evening, night and following day. We were unable to re-establish contact with the relative who had alerted us to the distress case. In the afternoon of September 21st we concluded our research believing either the phone number provied to be wrong or the boat to have been intercepted.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
