Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 20th September 2021Case name: 2021_09_20-CM570
Situation: 46 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barent
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 20th of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 46 travellers, including seven women and one baby of only one month, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya the previous evening at around 22.00 CEST on a green rubber boat. None of the travellers were wearing life vests. We managed to reach the travellers and they gave us their GPS position.
At 12.44 CEST we sent an email to the so-called Libyan coastguard as well as rescue NGOs active in the area, alerting them to the distress of the travellers.
After this, we lost contact to the travellers.
Later in the afternoon we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barents, operated by Doctors Without Borders.
