Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean
Summary: On Saturday the 21st of August 2021 in the evening, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of three travellers in distress in the Alboran. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima at 07.00 CEST the same morning on jet ski and were heading towards Motril. The relative told us that they had run out of petrol. We alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers and additionally sent the number of Salvamento Maritimo to the travellers so that they were able to call by themselves. Throughout the night we received updates from the travellers as the situation deteriorated with waves getting higher, and we were able to forward their updated positions to Salvamento Maritimo who were searching for them. At 06.00 CEST we learned from relatives who had spoken to the travellers that they had been rescued and brought to Spain.
